In its depths, the mountain was home for centuries to one of the largest and most important Dwarf kingdoms in Middle-earth. It was populated by the Dwarves of Durin's Folk, who were driven out by the dragon Smaug in 2770 TA, but returned in 2941 TA following the exploits of Thorin and his Company. During the War of the Ring, the Lonely Mountain was besieged by a large army of Easterlings allied with Sauron, who was however defeated and driven back east. With the end of the conflict, Gimli, returning from the Battle of the Morannon, led a contingent of Dwarves to the Glittering Caves in Rohan, where he founded a vassal kingdom of Erebor. The Great Hall of Thrór, likely built by the eponymous King Under the Mountain after his return to Erebor in 2590 TA, was the ancient throne room where the Dwarves held great feasts and their councils. It was devastated during Smaug's attack in 2770 TA, and in the years that followed, it remained in complete ruin, with the shattered remains of the tablets and the bones of Smaug's unfortunate victims scattered throughout the hall. After the dragon's death and the Battle of the Five Armies, the new King Under the Mountain, Dáin II Ironfoot, restored the hall to its former glory and made it his throne room."
